These changes are then frozen and stored for further examination. Firnhaber said this method is economical, both for women and health institutions.

"You just train nurses in two weeks and you do not need a doctor to do so or laboratory, cytologists and high-tech diagnostic equipment, even just a visit.

When patients enter the clinic, smeared cervix with vinegar and when there are abnormalities and meet certain criteria then the trained personnel were asked to freeze it. After that the patient was asked to return within 4-6 weeks and then monitored on a regular basis, "he added.

Clinic at Helen Joseph, the patient is given a pap smear testing and vinegar as well.

Firnhaber said that although the vinegar method is not perfect because only about 70 percent accuracy, but the method is good news for women who do not have access to pap smear tests.

Firnhaber was told the woman who had HIV-positive, more visible in the cervix of abnormal cells and it is more common in female patients whose age was younger.

"Cervical cancer is a disease that is common to middle-aged woman at the age of 45, 50 or 55 years. But we see a shift down to 10-15 years in South Africa.

We have seen a woman aged 35, 30, even 25 have undergone cervical cancer. Even at the clinic, we have seen the condition of women as young as 19 and 20 who have experienced changes in the cervix are very severe. And if not treated, it will lead to cervical cancer. So it is alarming, "he explained.

Counsellors HIV / AIDS in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, Lilly Xaba said that he was HIV-positive himself, he also understands the importance of pap smears regularly and encourage all women whom he met to do so.

"We teach women to know about it, especially those who are HIV-positive because they are prone conditions. We also encourage them to get regular checkups so that they can lead a healthy life.

In some cases, the women talked to us about their symptoms and as a counselor, you know the symptoms they are referring to is a cancer. But when we suggest to consult, they tend to be rejected for not falling ill, "said Xaba.

Yet according to Xaba, if more women could take the initiative to determine the condition of his body then they will get help faster. Dr. Firnhaber said vinegar test method has also been shown to effectively detect pre-cancerous cells in women with HIV-positive and HIV-negative.
